Remarkable Effect of Biogas project Yongshou County in 2005 |

My name is Quan Xiaolian and I’m 34 years old. I have 3 families my husband and 2 children. We all live in QijiapoVillageJianjunTownshipYongshouCounty which is in the northwest and 2 Km faraway from the County. In the past my family was poor (per capita income less than RMB750 Yuan) and the main income depend on 3 mus of wheat and 5 mus of orchards. In 2005 after building a biogas-generating pit, my family's living conditions have changed greatly and the income also increased year by year. Specific performance is following: 1. Guided by the CountyWomen's Federation, our village constructed 11 biogas demonstration households in 2005 and my family is one of them. Firstly I cook meal using biogas stoves and don’t use firewood anymore. The biogas can be used for 240 days in a year. Then one year I can save 2,400 kg of firewood (every day saving firewood 10 kg). The saved firewood (wheat straw) can be sold to the paper mills and earn more than RMB 300 Yuan. Secondly lighting does not use electricity. My family can save about 140 degrees electricity in a year (average month 15 degrees) costs more than RMB70 Yuan, Then 3 years my family totally save the firewood and electricity expense around RMB 1,000 Yuan. 2. It costs around RMB175 Yuan (every mu about RMB35 Yuan) to spray pesticide on the 5 mu orchard and we have to spray pesticide 8 times in one year. We fertilize three times (in spring, summer and winter) to the fruit trees with carbamide, glycyrrhizinate, potassium and organic manure. It cost me about RMB200 Yuan per mu。But the biogas residual contains ammonium, calcium, potassium elements. In the first year I tried to using biogas residual to fertilize 1 mu fruit trees in summer and spray biogas liquid as pesticide. Then this mu fruit trees have greener leaves and better color than the other fruit on fruit trees which didn’t use biogas liquid. In the first year I saved RMB105Yuan. From 2006 to 2007 I fertilized the fruit trees with biogas dregs and spray biogas liquid on the fruit trees in summer and save money RMB700Yuan. Then 3 years I total saved RMB805 Yuan. 3. The raw materials for biogas pit are feces of people and livestock. So I worked harder in breeding. Originally I raised two pigs and need 25Kg feed (0.8Yuan per Kg) per month. After use the biogas slurry, a month only need 10 Kg feed then can save money RMB 12 Yuan monthly and the pigs can be sold advance 20 days or a month. The benefit is more than RMB1000Yuan In short, under the guidance of Women's Federation of the provincial and municipalities, coordinated by the countyWomen's Federation, the construction of the biogas demonstration households by the Mothers Association inspire the women in our village and raised their understanding of building biogas pits. Up to now it has been built 33 biogas demonstration households in my village. The original dirty situation of our village has been changed, the living standard of the villagers has been upward and the living environment has been improved. |

My name is Zhang Yan and I’m 26 years old. I live at Zhaojiagou Village Qinghuabian town Baota District Yan'an City. I have 2 families, my husband and a 2-year-old baby. I was busy taking care my baby and do not work outside. I and my husband want to do business to raise income after seeing other villagers getting richer. In 2006 the Sunflower Action trained and publicity the information of building biogas system to us, then fund me build the biogas tank and raise pigs. In 2007 I earned about RMB 15 thousand Yuan by raising pigs. Furthermore I saved 1.5 Ton coal after using biogas to cook and heat water. In 2007 Spring the government will help the villagers to build greenhouse to plant vegetables. Some villagers were afraid that they can not do this work well. I discussed with my husband and agreed that we can learn how to planting vegetables in greenhouse because we are both young and can learn every thing. With the fund of the government I built 3 greenhouses and planting watermelons and muskmelons and earn more than RMB 20 thousand Yuan. I fertilized the melons with biogas dregs and liquid so that I did not buy chemical fertilizer and save about 1 thousand Yuan. My family became the greenhouse demonstration household and many leaders of Provincial and city come to visit my greenhouses and biogas system. Although I and my husband are a little busy but we have hope and bright prospect.

My name is Meng Hanying and I’m 45 years old. I have 4 families: my father-in-law, mother-in-law, husband and son, we all live in 9th villager group, JinguangVillage, LaojunTownship, Hantai District, HanzhongCity which lies in the hilly area of HanzhongBasin. I plant 2 Mu of rice and rape, 0.3Mu of cucumber, pepper, tomato, towel gourd and other vegetables. All these is about enough to eat. In 2006 "Sunflower Action" project constructed 30 biogas systems in our village and my family is one of them. Now after using a whole year I really realized the advantage. Originally the income our family is several thousand Yuan and mainly come from the 2 mus’ farm. I used wood grass, honeycomb briquettes and gas to cooking. In one year it costs me 750 Yuan to buy 1200 honeycomb briquettes (each 0.25 Yuan) and 6 jugs of gas( each 75Yuan). Previous I had to spend two or three hours to cook three meals in one day, but after using biogas stove I only need more than one hour to cook and I don’t buy gas and honeycomb briquettes any more. My mother-in-law is old and sick so that I need to take care of her. But in busy farming season I had to ask other people to care her. After using biogas I need less time to cook so that I have more time to farm and care my mother-in-law. My husband has more time to work out and increase the income of my family. In spite of saving time and money, it also provides good biological liquid fertilizer. I plant two mu of rice field and it costs me RMB 140 Yuan to buy two bags of chemical fertilizers and 2 bottles of pesticides in the past year. After I fertilized the field with biogas liquid fertilizer the yields is proved ( rice is about 550Kg per acre, it is more than 50Kg than last year, the rape is 200Kg per mu it is more than 25Kg than last year) The income is more RMB285 Yuan than last year. I plant cucumber, tomatoes and towel gourds in my yard and I fertilized them with biogas liquid. Then I can save the money of buying vegetables 200 Yuan. Anyway it is saved RMB1090 Yuan and earned more than RMB 285 Yuan since I used the biogas in last October. The situation of the village has been changed and we can not see flies or mosquitoes. We don’t need the anti-mosquito and other pesticide any more. Then we do not often sick now and feel better. One of the villager Wu Minghuan (female), she heard that I fertilized the vegetable with biogas liquid and have a better yield . Then she learned from me and fertilized her vegetables with biogas liquid too, the wax gourd in her vegetable garden are more than 15 Kg (before it is about 7.5 Kg). By constructing biogas the labor burden of the women are reduced and their family status are upgraded. All these we must thank Mrs Mei Ng, it’s her do the kind thing to our women and children. As the director of the village women, I have more time to work for the villagers. Now many households in my village have not constructing biogas tank because they have not enough money. They hope they can use biogas at an early day.
